Y5 Music Masterclass

23rd January 2018
The focus in this session was African music which the children absolutely loved, having already had a taste of African culture in a previous workshop.
In groups, the children performed a rendition of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, learning new musical phrases along the way - 'ostinato' (repeated rhythm/patterns), 'call and response' (listening to a pattern and repeating it back) and harmony (different pitches sung together).
They then went on to learn a couple of notes on the djembes drums, an instrument indigenous to the African tribes. The children were taught bass and tone notes and created their own patterns which they performed in front of their peers. Everyone had a great time!
